Domains Defined

One of the most important requirements for having a successful web presence is the domain. It is what visitors will observe first when they come across your site and what they will associate you with. The domain should be easy to remember, but should also be something that notifies your visitors what the site is about.

Generic Top-Level Domain Names (gTLDs)

A domain traditionally contains 2 parts - a Top-Level Domain Name (TLD) and a Second-Level Domain Name (SLD). If you have domain.com, for instance, ".com" is the TLD and "domain" is the SLD. There are a couple of groups of Top-Level Domain Names that you should examine before you pick the domain you want. Your selection should be built upon the aim of your website and on its target visitors. Let's have a gaze at the gTLDs, or generic TLDs - these are the most common TLDs intended to denote a particular intention - .com (business establishments), .net (networks), .biz (businesses), .info (informative resources), .org (organizations of a non-commercial character), .mobi (handheld devices), .asia (the Asia Pacific), .name (individuals or families), .pro (given professions), etc. As you can see, these TLDs encompass most spheres of life, so you should choose the one that would denote the aim of your web site best. There is no limitation as to who can register such domains, but some of them contain extra requirements to prove that you qualify to keep such a domain name (.mobi and .pro, for instance).

Country-code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs)

The ccTLDs, or country-code Top-Level Domains, are country-specific domain names. Each country has its own ccTLD. Picking such a domain is good if your target group of site visitors is from a particular country. Many folks would elect to purchase commodities or services from a local website, and if your goal is Canada, for instance, picking a .ca domain could increase the visits to your web site.

Domain Name Redirects

You can register several Top-Level Domains, which can forward your site's visitors to a given web site such as domain.com, for example. This would boost the traffic and decrease the chance of someone pinching your site visitors by registering the same Second-Level Domain Name with a different Top-Level Domain Name - if you are not using a trademark.

Name Servers (NSs)

Each TLD has domain records. The name server records (NS records, also known as DNS records) specify where the domain is hosted, i.e. they point to the hosting provider whose name servers (NSs, also known as DNSs) it is using at the moment. You can modify the DNSs of your domain name at any moment. You can have your domain registered with one provider and get the web hosting service itself from another. Thus, if you register your domain and discover good website hosting services someplace else later, you can point your domain to the new company's NSs right away.

Domain Server Records (NS Records)

In general, as long as your domain name utilizes a certain pair of DNSs, all its domain records will point to the same hosting firm. Some website hosting companies, though, permit you to edit specific DNS records, such as the A records and the MX records of your domain. The A record is an IP address, which displays on which web server your site is located, while the MX records indicate which hosting server handles the mail addresses related to your domain name. For example, if you engage a new web designer and he build an .ASP website that will be accommodated on his personal Windows web hosting server, you may want to edit solely the Internet Protocol address (the A record) but not the MX records of your domain. So, www.domain.com will point to the Windows web server, but your emails or any sub-domain names like forum.domain.com or shop.domain.com will still be in your current Linux web hosting account. The .ASP platform is built by Microsoft and calls for a Windows server, even though a Linux server would be way more reliable.

Only a number of web hosting suppliers allow you to edit given DNS records and quite often this an additional paid service. With us, you get a vast collection of TLDs to select from and you can modify all domain name records or redirect the domains through a forwarding tool at no additional charge.
